Safety & Compliance

Brakes were the main theme in this month’s roadside violations.

Stop lamps were the most common issue. Even one brake light or marker light that’s out can lead to a citation. A quick pre-trip inspection — turning on all lights and walking around the truck and trailer — can prevent this.

Damaged brake hoses were another frequent problem. Inspectors are seeing more hoses with chafing, rubbing, or cracking. Even minor wear can trigger a violation and present a real safety risk.

ABS warning lights also made the list. If the light is on, something in the braking system isn’t working as it should. Even if brakes feel fine, an inspector will see that warning as an automatic violation.

All three issues are easily spotted during a thorough pre-trip inspection. A few extra minutes of attention before rolling out can save time, money, and stress down the road.

Nationwide inspection trends show enforcement is already ramping up ahead of Brake Safety Week, which officially runs August 24–30. This year’s focus will be on brake components, especially drums and rotors. Inspectors will be checking for cracks, rust, missing hardware, and metal-on-metal contact. Now is the time to take care of any needed repairs. Visit cvsa.org for inspection tips.

HazMat update: Bridgeway HazMat drivers have had no HazMat violations since February — an excellent achievement that shows strong attention to detail. Keep up the good work by double-checking paperwork and storing it properly before every trip.

Roadside Alerts

Theft reports are on the rise, especially at rest areas, truck stops, and unsecured lots. Thieves are targeting tools, accessories, and personal items left in plain sight. Always lock the cab, secure side boxes, and store valuables out of view.

Speeding continues to be one of the most serious violations. Driving 15 mph or more over the limit can result in termination or lease cancellation in some cases. Even smaller violations can hurt CSA scores and increase inspection frequency. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding plays a role in about one-third of fatal crashes. Staying within posted limits keeps both drivers and freight safer.

Freight Market Update

Last week, the number of loads posted on DAT increased by about 5%, while the number of available trucks dropped by 11%. More loads and fewer trucks means competition for freight is stronger.

  • Dry van load volume rose 4%. Rates held steady at around $2.02 per mile.
  • Reefer freight saw the biggest increase, with volume up 12%. Rates stayed at about $2.33 per mile.
  • Flatbed freight remained steady in load volume, but fewer trucks helped keep rates at roughly $2.43 per mile.

While rates didn’t change much, the tighter truck supply could give drivers more options in certain lanes. Fuel prices stayed mostly flat, helping keep operating costs steady.

Driver of the Month – Greg Schulz

This month’s Driver of the Month is Greg Schulz, recognized for outstanding professionalism and teamwork.

When another driver suffered a serious mechanical failure and lost his wheels while hauling a HazMat load, Greg stopped to help. He stayed with the driver for over 36 hours, securing the scene, protecting the load, and providing critical support until repairs were made.

His dedication ensured the load was delivered on time and the situation remained safe. Greg’s actions are a true example of what it means to be a professional driver. Congratulations, Greg, and thank you for setting such a strong example.

Key Takeaways for August

  • Check stop lamps, brake hoses, and ABS lights before every trip
  • Prepare for Brake Safety Week, August 24–30
  • Lock your cab and secure your gear to prevent theft
  • Watch your speed, especially in school zones and high-enforcement areas

That’s it for the August 2025 edition of Fleet Brief. Thank you for reading, and thank you for everything you do to keep freight moving safely and efficiently.
